CASA HISTORY

Former home and atelier of Brazilian artist Martha Meyer, the casa was built in the 1980's by famous ceramist Calazans, heavily influenced by a love for the Greek Mediterranean islands with their simple homes seemingly washed in constant sunshine. This bright, exceedingly welcoming home was in recent years the creative studio of Wilbert Das and his team of artisans, UXUA D.A.S. Design. In executing the 2020 renovation Wilbert and collaborator Peter Kempkens made updates to emphasize comfort and leisure such as the stepped swimming pool with rare onyx tiles and a large, open kitchen, indoor/outdoor lounges and dining areas, and a rooftop BBQ grill. The casa was then christened Casa Luz (House of Light). Recently (2023) its 3 spacious suites have undergone complete renovations.

Casa Luz is just steps away from UXUA's reception, separated only by the rustic Rua do Bosque, a charming stone-paved street.

DESIGN

Nature plays a big role in Casa Luz's charm with a flowering garden in the central courtyard where tropical birds love to nest, making colorful entrances and exits all day long and filling the air with song. Bedroom suites are reached by walking through this tropical garden and each is accessed directly from the courtyard, offering privacy and convenience. The house has a cheerful style celebrating Bahian creativity with four tapestries and a screen-printing from the renowned artist Kennedy Bahia, who gained fame working in the 70's and 80's. Original decor and objects are from UXUA's Artist In Casa mixed with custom pieces of the UXUA D.A.S. collection as well as contributions of local Pataxó artisans and regional artists.

“The whole place gives off a bohemian vibe that's been likened to Saint-Tropez in the 1950's.”
